Title: Content Distribution System and Method. Canada patent No. 2,407,774
Issued January 5, 2005; expiry September 21, 2022.
The abstract of this patent is:
-
A method and system for the secure distribution of content to authorized persons.
-
A content provider uploads encrypted content to the system and specifies the institutions or individuals to which the content is to be provided and release conditions under which it is to be made available. Encrypted content is made available to a recipient together with a decryption code, if the identity of the recipient can be confirmed through a validation procedure and if the release conditions are met. The release conditions may include a time and date at which the release is to occur. The encrypted content have an associated sample which may be streamed to the recipient so as to permit the recipient to assess whether to download the full encrypted content or not. In one embodiment, the validation procedure includes biometric validation of the identity of the recipient.
This Canadian patent has claims including the use of biometrics to verify the identity of authorized recipients of content, encryption and decryption of the content upon verification, provision of samples of content, setting of release conditions (such as time and date) for the content, providing downloads to authorized recipients and provision of feedback from recipients. Specific claims are made for radio station and record label use of the system and for distribution of digital music, graphics, video and advertising.

The U.S. patent for “Content Distribution System and Method” covers a method of distributing digital content, such as music and advertising, to selected individuals over the Internet, in which the uploading content provider selects the individuals that are entitled to access the content and sets release conditions, such as a time and date. Once the identities of the selected individuals have been verified at login, they are provided with access to the uploaded content if those release conditions are met.
